Itinerary of the tour to Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta
Day 1 Travelers are picked up very early from their accommodations if they are staying in downtown Santa Marta or along the route where the vehicle transports the hikers to the starting point of the trek in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
The vehicle arrives at the village of Guachaca, which is the starting point for the trek to Gotsezhy. Here, travelers prepare their backpacks and, alongside the indigenous guide, begin the 2-day excursion in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
The trekking paths are marked by rural and indigenous territories. Therefore, it is highly likely that during the journey, you’ll observe field workers and indigenous Wiwa and Kogui people coexisting harmoniously.
The trek to this indigenous community nestled in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta takes approximately 4 hours, depending on the hiking pace of the group of hikers.
Upon arrival at Gotsezhy, the Mamo (spiritual leader) welcomes the group and invites them to explore the community, where indigenous men, women, and children will be eager to share their culture and traditions.
After lunch, travelers have the entire afternoon to rest. At night, the guide will gather everyone and lead them to the ceremonial hut, where the Mamo will explain the worldview of the Wiwa people of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
Day 2 This day comprises 3 activities specific to Wiwa Indigenous Tourism, with the order determined by the guide based on the group’s needs.
Extraction of Maguey Fibers: This activity involves cutting the plant and preparing it by the indigenous guide, who, with the help of a bamboo cane, extracts all the sap from the plant, leaving only the fibers for subsequent washing and drying.
Once the fibers are dry, the process is completed by Wiwa women, who use natural dyes based on roots and plants to color the fibers for making various handicrafts.
Exhibition of Handicrafts: At the Gotsezhy refuge, a group of female weavers is responsible for crafting clothes, backpacks, earrings, bracelets, and various other handicrafts for future commercialization.
Visit to the Natural Pool of the Matuna Waterfall: This 15-minute walk from the Gotsezhy cabin leads to one of the best attractions in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, a natural pool formed by a natural waterfall called the Matuna Waterfall.
Typically, tourists spend a couple of hours at this waterfall, taking a delightful bath and capturing photographs of this spectacular destination before returning to the village.
After experiencing these activities of Indigenous Tourism in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, it’s time to bid farewell to this community. Travelers often create a strong bond with the indigenous people and leave very satisfied with their experience in this Wiwa village.
The return trek begins to the village of Guachaca, the return point where the vehicle will be waiting to transport them back to the city of Santa Marta.
Note: The itinerary of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta Tour may vary depending on weather conditions or ground transportation.
